| Why do I write?
When I was ten years old, I wrote and published a newspaper. I had one subscriber outside my family. I don’t know why he subscribed. I don’t know why I wrote. Maybe I found it easier than talking, but I have written ever since—in prep school—in college—in the Army—in business. I like being a wordsmith. It gives me pleasure. It is my hope to give pleasure to others. So why do I write today? I write because the keyboard is there, smack dab in front of me. And I wrote each of my six books because as long as I was at the keyboard, I figured I might as well do something productive. Seriously, like so many people, I just knew there was a novel within me. At the same time, I had been told that folks who wrote non-fiction (that was me) were unable to shift gears and write fiction. I didn’t understand why that should be . . . so I shifted gears. In the process, I discovered overdrive and the writing was fairly smooth from that point on. |
